Influence of Microstructural Inhomogeneity on Fracture Behaviour in SSM-HPDC Al-Si-Cu-Fe Component with Low Si Content

چکیده
In the current paper, a low-Si aluminium alloy (1.4-2.4% Si) was used to fabricate a complex shape telecom component using Semi-Solid High-Pressure Die Cast (SSM-HPDC), process. Microstructure and fracture characteristics were investigated. The cast material exhibited microstructural inhomogeneity, in particular macrosegregation in the form of liquid surface segregation bands in addition to sub-surface pore bands and gross centre porosity. Tensile specimens were taken from the cast components. Elongation and microstructural inhomogeneity were investigated and correlated. Fracture surfaces of the tensile specimen were examined under scanning electron microscope (SEM). The study showed that both near surface liquid segregation bands and subsurface porosity strongly affected the fracture behaviour. Dominant for loss of ductility was gross centre porosity. The centre porosity was found to be a combination of trapped gas and insufficient, irregular feeding patterns.

DENDRITE FRAGMENTATION IN THE SHEARED MELT BY FATIGUE EROSION MECHANISM OF SEMISOLID Al-Si ALLOY (A.356.0
Over the last few decades, there have been many mechanisms proposed to describe the formation of the non-dendritic microstructures during Semisolid Metal (SSM) processing; including dendrite fragmentation, spherical growth, cellular growth and recalescence. Dendrite fragmentation is the most popular mechanism of all these hypotheses. It is the purpose of the present article to examine the morph...
متن کاملEffects of Various Ageing Heat Treatments on Microstructural Features and Hardness of Piston Aluminum Alloy
Piston aluminum alloys have different intermetallic phases, such as Cu3Al, Mg2Si ,and AlNi phases. The morphology and the distribution of such phases have important roles on mechanical properties of the piston material. Therefore, in this research, various ageing heat treatments on the mentioned material were done and the microstructural feature and the hardness were studi...
متن کاملInvestigation of Transformation Induced Plasticity in High Al–low Si TRIP Steel
This study was conducted in order to investigate the influence of plastic deformation on the transformation of retained austenite in a TRIP steel with a high content of Al and a low content of Si. To the aim, appropriate treatments were used to produce the starting material (TRIP steel). The microstructure of the obtained steel was composed of bainite and phases including ferrite and retained a...

The present work was carried out on Al-7%Si-0.4%Mg-X alloy (where X = Mg, Fe, Sr or Be), where the effect of solidification rate on the eutectic silicon characteristics was investigated. Two solidification rates corresponding to dendrite arm spacings (DAS) of 24 and 65 μm were employed. Samples with 24 μm DAS were solution heat-treated at 540 °C for 5 and 12 h prior to quenching in warm water a...

In this article, microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of Al-Si-Cu/NCP composites were evaluated. Reinforced nanocomposites with 1 wt% nano-clay were fabricated by the method of the stir casting. Stirring times and temperatures were variable parameters to produce specimens. Consequently, the effect of a T6 heat treatment, which contained solutioning at 490 ºC for ...
